TOMATO Question ?

This is the first time I've attempted to grow anything, I am one of those idiots that thought vegetables came from supermarkets !!

This year I grew some tomatoes from seed.. Yay!! I have them in pots on my deck, The problem is that I am going away next week for 3 weeks and there are still quite a few left on the plants..

I live in Canada close to Us Wa/idaho border so it's beginning to get cold outside especially at night..

I have about 6 cherry Tom plants.. What can I do with the green tomatoes?Do I just have to let them waste or is there anything I can do .. ( I have never tried canning and don't have jars, I don't think I'd want to try that this time) Any other suggestions..

Also I have Basil that has gone to seed .. I know that the seeds are small and must be on the plant somewhere, what is the best way to retrieve and store ..

Thank You ..

Re: TOMATO Question ?

Pick the green tomatoes, wrap them loosely in newspaper, being sure there are no damaged fruit and put them in a drawer. The mature fruit will slowly ripen in the paper.

Basil seeds can be harvested by shaking and beating the dry flower spikes over a bowl.

Re: TOMATO Question ?

Mine ripen in a bowl on the counter. I don't wrap them.

Actually, to avoid having them ripen all at once, I put some in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator; they'll stay green for quite a while. Just take them out of the fridge, and they will begin to ripen in a couple of days.

Congratulations and good for you !!!
I am glad to hear of your new interest
in growing your own veggies & herbs !

I just usually put green tomatoes in a brown
paper bag and put them in a dry and dark space.

Just don't forget about them !
